LAWRENCE — Former Senate Majority Leader and Middle East peace envoy George Mitchell will give the annual Dole Lecture at the Dole Institute of Politics at the University of Kansas at 7:30 p.m. April 4. His speech is free and open to the public. Mitchell was U.S. special envoy for Middle East peace from January 2009 to May 2011. He served as Republican U.S. senator from Maine for 15 years but served as a diplomat for Democratic Pres. Bill Clinton. While in the Senate, he led the successful 1990 reauthorization of the Clean Air Act, wrote the first national oil spill prevention and clean-up law and helped write the Low-Income Housing Tax Credit program. He also pushed for passage of the nation’s first child care bill. Five years ago, Mitchell led the investigation into the use of performance-enhancing drugs in major league baseball and served as chairman of the special commission investigating allegations of impropriety in the bidding process for the Olympic games.
