OTTAWA — The city of Ottawa has received a $15,000 grant from the Doctor Pepper Snapple Group and Kaboom, the non-profit group that promotes exercise and recreaction, for new playground equipment. The “Let’s Play” grant will be used to help buy two “Imagination Playground in a Box” play systems. The city will use $6,000 from a special park fund to match the grant. The special play box includes giant foam blocks, mats, wagons, fabric and crates to allow children to do their own thing. The special play boxes will be at the Don Woodward Community Center. The set, which can be used by all ages, can be housed inside but can also taken outside to the parking lot during good weather. There’s a possibility that the play boxes could be lent to other groups for special events, City Commissioner Sarah Caylor said. The sets are expected to arrive sometime this summer.  The city partnered with the Ottawa Library and Ottawa Recreation Commission, who will provide staff to be trained as “play associates” and incorporate the imagination playground into their programs. The city’s status as one of Laboom’s “Playful Cities” helped snag the grant.
