GARNETT – Garnett Police Chief Kevin PeKarek and Anderson County High School advanced government students want the city to replace yield signs with stop signs to improve safety at city intersections. The Anderson County Review reports that PeKarek conducted a study of wrecks in the city limits after a request by the advanced government class. The Review reports the class had surveyed students and found many were concerned about safety at intersections that had yield signs. At a recent city commission meeting, PeKarek said he agrees with the students even though his research showed intersection accidents haven’t a major problem. Many of the site-distances at those intersections are too close to safely roll through and some intersections see a large amount of traffic especially at certain times of the day and week, he said. As an aside, according to the study, the most likely places to be in accidents are parking lots at Anderson County High School, Sonic and Country Mart. Commissioners say they’ll look at the proposal.
