UNITED STATES — For the first time in its history, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is listing drug-resistant superbugs by threat level. This week, the CDC issued its highest level of warning for a drug-resistant strain of Gonorrhea. The CDC calls the sexually- transmitted disease an “urgent threat” to the health of Americans. About 820,000 cases of Gonorrhea are reported in the US every year, but about one-third of the new cases are a superbug that has developed a resistance to nearly every drug created to fight it, including the most powerful drug. Also this week, the CDC re-issued its warning about the overuse of antibiotics in the US, which is creating a whole series of new superbugs that resist nearly all drugs.
