PARKER — A group visiting Miami and Linn counties this weekend marked a dark period of American history. Every five years, the group made up of Potawatomi Indians, historians and others retrace the Potowatomi Trail of Death which goes from Indiana to Kansas. A group of more than 850 Potawatomies was forced from their homes in northern Indiana and pushed to the Sugar Creek Mission in what is now Linn County 175 years ago. Forty-two people, mostly children, died during the forced march. The Miami County Republic reported the group held a commemoration hosted by the Linn County Historical Society at the St. Philippine Duchesne Memorial Park, which is the former Sugar Creek Mission.
