EUREKA — Kansas Attorney General Derek Schmidt has confirmed that a suspect in a double-murder in Eureka was killed late Wednesday night in a shootout with Kansas Bureau of Investigation agents in Eureka. Kevin Welsh, 35, Toronto, Kan., was found in a building described as a combination of a barn and a garage. A passing law enforcement officer noticed the entrance to the unoccupied structure had been tampered with, deputy KBI director Kyle Smith said. KBI agents contacted the owner of the building and received consent to search it. KBI agents searching through the building and encountered Welsh, who pointed a handgun at the agents, Smith said. Welsh was shot by the agents, who provided first aid, Smith said. Welsh was pronounced dead at a hospital in Eureka. Smith said an investigation is under way. The Greenwood County Attorney, Joe Lee, will appoint a special prosecutor to oversee the investigation. Welsh was a suspect in a shooting that seriously injured his former girlfriend and killed her mother and stepfather Oct. 2 in Greenwood County.
