The number one story in Anderson County this year, according to the Anderson County Review was…the rising gas prices, along with cost of pretty much everything else going up, as well. Like most everyone else in the country, starting your car in the morning to go to work was painful. With 45% of the counties workforce, over 1,500 people, traveling outside the county each day to work with a median commute of 26 minutes one way, the pinch of higher gas prices affected everyone. It’s estimated that the cost to commute in a five-day work week was more than $70 in gas alone. That cost also affected the Anderson County Sheriff’s Department and the number of hours they were on patrol. It hit the City of Garnett Public Works Department hard too, with the city having to allocate more money to keep the machines and vehicles running to serve the public. Gas hit $4.89 at one point and although the cost has gone down significantly, it still is taking a toll on commuters.
