Starting New Year’s Day, the State tax on groceries will drop two and a half percent. Right now, the plan is for the grocery tax to disappear in 2025. Say you pay $10 in taxes on groceries. With the state tax reduced by 2.5 percent, you could save 25 cents for every $10. Now, that doesn’t sound like much, but for those who run daycares and feed a lot of mouths each day, it could save them thousand of dollars a year. And think about it. If your family buys $100 a week in groceries, that’s $2.50 a week, $10 a month, and $120 a year. Now, take that remaining 4 percent off and you’re are saving $26 a month or $312 a year. That…is huge for many families. And even bigger for day care facilities.
There are some foods that are not included, such as, deli items or other prepared food. The state grocery store sales tax reduction goes into effect New Year’s Day. It is set to fall to 0 by 2025. But Kansas Democrats are already pushing to drop that to zero as soon as lawmakers go back to work in January.
