The question of a new swimming pool in Garnett will be in front of the Garnett City Commission this year. Recently a pool company out of Saint Charles, Missouri told the commission that trying to update a 90 year old pool was not recommended. They say the main drain to the pool does not meet modern safety standards and the bath house would need a review to meet disability act standards. Pools can be expensive, and the $2.5 to $3.5 million price estimate for a new pool will be a tough one to swallow for the city. Rec Director, Phil Bures, says the pool is on its last leg and needs to be replaced. He says it is bound to need a major repair in the near future.

The pool was constructed in the mid 1930s as a Works Project Administration project during the Great Depression. Bures says he contacted the pool company to get a professional opinion on the state of the pool. He says it has been talked about many times and he feels it needs to be addressed again.
