People should get a glimpse of a comet starting next week that will definitely be a once in a lifetime opportunity. The Zwicky Comet will be visible Thursday, the 12th through February 1st. According to astronomers, the last time Zwicky was visible on earth was 50,000 years ago, don’t ask me how they figured that out. The good news is that if it continues brightening on its current pace, you should be able to see it with the naked eye.
Although the comet will be relatively close to earth, 26 to 100 million miles away, scientist say going to a dark location and looking through binoculars, a large camera lens or telescope will give you a better view. Look for it to appear just south of the Big Dipper and north of the Little Dipper. January 21st there will be a new moon and that night may be one of the best opportunities to see the comet— that won’t be back for another 50,000 years.
