Last week, I bought 36 eggs and it cost me over $13. It kind of makes me want to raise my own chickens. Even though egg prices are supposed to be coming down a bit, it’s hard to see those price decreases just yet, as U.S. egg production is still below a year ago. USDA Livestock Analyst, Shayle Shagam, has the numbers for December:
He adds that the bird flu continues to cause losses of egg layers as producers have to destroy entire flocks to keep the virus from spreading. Holiday demand sent prices soaring just before Christmas to over $5 a dozen. The average price per dozen this coming year expected at $2.05. Last year was about $3.21. In 2020, that price was 89 cents a dozen.
