Yesterday, Thursday, February 2nd, Governor Laura Kelly started the push for what she calls an “Axing Your Taxes” package introduced to the Kansas House and Senate. It’s three parts and she says there is something for every Kansan in the plan. First, Kelly is calling for complete elimination of the food sales tax by July first, not a couple years down the road. The second part goes further, elimination of the sales tax on groceries, diapers, and feminine hygiene products. The third part calls for the creation of a Back-to- School Sales Tax Holiday every August to buy school supplies, including computers, instructional material and other items.

The other part would benefit seniors. Currently Kansas retirees making less than $75,000 a year do not pay state income tax on social security income but once they reach one dollar more, their entire income is taxed. Governor Kelly is proposing lifting the cap to $100,000.
