Beginning last week, you will se an increase presence of police and deputies around school. The Ottawa Police Department and the Franklin County Sheriff’s office is joining other law enforcement agencies across the state in a campaign to increase awareness of roadway safety in Kansas. Motor vehicle crashes are the leading cause of death for teens 15-18 years old in the United States, ahead of all other types of injury, disease or violence. Ottawa Police Chief, Adam Weingartner:

Even one teen death is unacceptable. Police urge you to slow down, put the phone away, or turn it off and always buckle up. Officers will be issuing citations for those who refuse to obey the traffic laws, whether it be for speeding, texting or failing to buckle up. Parents are asked to remind their teen drivers that driving is a privilege and encourage them to learn the importance of driving safely and set that example for them. The campaign runs through March 3rd.
