With severe weather season coming up, Governor Laura Kelly wants Kansans to be prepared. She has issued a Proclamation for tomorrow morning February 24th, declaring March 6th thru the 10th as Severe Weather and Flood Safety Preparedness Weekeek in Kansas. Last year, there were only 56 documented tornadoes in Kansas, down from previous years, and no deaths were recorded from those storms
The national weather service will conduct a statewide tornado drill at 10:00 the morning of March 7th. Everyone is encouraged to participate in the drill by practicing seeking secure, safe shelter from a tornado. Officials in Ottawa say the tornado sirens will sound and all area residents, businesses, and schools are urged to treat the drill as if it were an actual tornado warning. Last year, there were no deaths attributed to tornadoes in the state, thanks in part to our early warning systems and the preparedness measures taken by Kansans across the state.
All week during Severe Weather Preparedness Week, KOFO will be airing news stories about different types of severe weather, ranging from tornadoes, lightning, hail and wind, and flood safety. Also, Monday night March 6th at 7:00 the National Weather Service will hold a storm spotter talk at the Ottawa Memorial Auditorium. If you are interested in becoming a storm spotter, the talk is free and open to the public.
