A bill in the Kansas Legislature that would eliminate the sales tax on food immediately could have a fairly dramatic impact on budget planners for the City of Ottawa. During the Commission’s Regular Study Session, Ottawa Finance Director, Melanie Landis, talked about what effect it would have on finances if it becomes law:
Landis says the reduction in revenue would have to be made up, possibly by increased property taxes, but other methods would be preferable to raising taxes.
