The House Tax Committee on Monday began debating Senate Bill 248, that was already passed in the Senate, would eliminate not only the state sales tax on food, but also all local sales tax on groceries by next year. Local government officials say that would devastate their budgets and presented lawmakers with options as they implored them to keep local sales taxes on groceries.
Ottawa City Commissioner, Sara Caylor, offered testimony on the Bill and says eliminating the local taxes comes with some stark choices:
Other communities told of having to cut police, fire, road programs, employee benefits and more. That Bill continues debate in front of the tax committee this week.
