For three straight years, Kansas lawmakers have passed a Transgender Sports Ban. The Fairness In Women’s Sports Act passed both Houses of the Legislature in early March. Each year, the Bill has been met with a veto from Governor Laura Kelly, but yesterday, Kansas lawmakers in both Houses, overrode Governor Laura Kelly’s Veto to make it Law. The new Law banning transgender athletes from competing in women’s sports, will now go into effect this Summer. Senator Mollie Baumgartner of Louisburg says without the law, it would create disadvantages for female athletes:
Governor Kelly says she is disappointed and there are many other things in schools that lawmakers should be focused on that would actually make a difference in the lives of Kansas children. Of the 109,00 students registered with the state high school activities association, 11 of them are transgender. The Kansas High School Athletics Association says they have received zero complaints about those students.
