Summer is inching closer and with the warmer days, comes thought of hanging out at the swimming pool. The Garnett pool is 80 years old. How much longer can it last? Recurring issues at the pool has led to that question to be brought up by the City Commission. Could Garnett replace the pool? City Commissioner, Mark Locke invited Garnett Parks & Recreation Director, Phil Bures, to a recent meeting for an update on the facility’s status, after Bures offered up a staff report last December outlining an estimate he’d had made of replacing the pool, which at the time ran in the neighborhood of $2.5-$3.5 million.
Locke’s immediate concern was whether the pool, in its present condition, was safe enough to open this Summer. Bures says he doesn’t think any of the issues they have are dangerous to users; however, he did say the pool is at the end of it’s life and will need to be replaced in the future and at some point there was going to be a major repair needed.
