The merger of Canadian Pacific and Kansas City Southern becomes official today, when the two companies unite to become Canadian Pacific Kansas City. The merger comes just one month after the two railroads received approval to merge, from the U. S. Surface Transportation Board. The combined rail line will run from Canada, Mexico and the United States, the first railroad to serve all three countries.

With more than 19,000 miles of track, the combined railroad will still be the smallest of the six largest railroads. Today, top officials from both companies are expected to gather in Kansas City for a celebration of the merger. They’ll be joined by local, federal and state officials from Missouri.
