Governor Laura Kelly has Vetoed a record number of Bills this year. One of those was House Bill 23-50, a human smuggling bill that define Human Smuggling as ” intentionally transporting harboring or concealing someone known to be in the U.S. illegally while benefiting from the transaction and knowing the individual is likely to be exploited for financial gain”. The Bill was championed by 59th District Representative Rebecca Schmoe, on the suggestion of Franklin County Sheriff Jeff Richards and other county Sheriff’s. Richards testified in front of the Legislature in late February:
Kelly says the Bill was rushed and overbroad. Republicans say they stand ready to overturn those decisions. The Governor also signed multiple Bills, including a Work Tax Credit, increased anti-stalking protection and various election policy changes.
