Good news for those headed to the lake this weekend for some good ol’ R & R! The Kansas Department of Health and Environment has downgraded the blue green algae alert for Melvern Lake in Osage County. You might remember the like was under warning status last week, but this week they have lowered that to “watch” status, this means that a blue-green algae and a harmful algal bloom may develop. Signage is posted at the lake, but remember the lake water is not safe for pets to drink, and contact with the water should be avoided. You can eat the fish you catch but be sure to rinse the filets with fresh water. Also, if you come in contact, wash with clean water as soon as possible.

Just be careful and avoid areas where you see a scum or paint-like surface on the water or small floating blue-green clumps or filaments in the water,
