The Ottawa Community may soon be home to a Safe Haven Baby Box drop off. It is designed for those who can’t provide the proper care for a baby to safely and legally give up the baby using specialized box. One of those exact boxes may have saved the life of an infant less than 24 hours old in Arkansas over the weekend. The baby was left in the safe haven box at the Benton Fire Department. Ottawa Fire Chief Tim Mathias describes the box:

Safe Haven founder Monica Kelsey says that Safe Haven Laws have been established in all 50 states. The Safe Haven Baby Boxes have been installed in nine states. The box in Ottawa would be the first installed in the state of Kansas.
