Memorial Day is a special day in America. The Federal Holiday is every year on the final Monday of May. It used to be called Decoration Day and originated after the American Civil War to commemorate the Union and the Confederate Soldiers who died in the Civil War. By the turn of the century in 1900, Memorial Day had been extended to honor all Americans who have died while in military service to the Nation. Ottawa will hold Memorial Day Services Monday, May 29th. Organizer Steve Deiss with details:
Local Army Vet Aaron Bien will be the featured speaker at the Ceremony. The importance of this day will not, and should not go unnoticed here in Ottawa. Please plan on attending the Ottawa Memorial Day Service, Monday morning at 10:00 at the War Memorial at 4th and Main. Take a look at the names on the wall. Think about the sacrifices they made, fighting for the rights and freedoms that you have today. Think about it. Thank them and remember not to let the efforts of our military be taken for granted.
