Drought has taken a wicked effect on the winter wheat crop. Farmers decision to abandon fields is going to lead to record high rate of abandonment across the midwest. USDA Meteorologist Brad Rippey says it will be nearly one third of the crop:

The Kansas Wheat Commission reports much higher rates in their surveys. The final numbers won’t be in until after the harvest. The four states he mentioned, along with Montana and Washington accounted for 68% of the winter wheat acreage planted last season.
