You may have noticed a tremendous police presence around the Ottawa University Campus today, June 5th. You may have even seen officers with guns out, the Star Team actively going through the campus. But, please don’t worry, the Ottawa Police Department was conducting a training session on the OU Campus today. The training is to allow first responders to prepare for an active threat that needs response.

Also beginning today, the department will start the CALEA Site Based Assessment toward maintaining CALEA Law Enforcement Accreditations. The assessor will be here today through Wednesday and meet with the department staff and community partners about how the department has adhered to their rigid guidelines. Ottawa Police Chief, Adam Weingartner on that assessor:

CALEA stands for Commission On Accreditations for Law Enforcement Agencies and is the gold standard for law enforcement accreditation. Very few police agencies in Kansas are accredited through CALEA. Ottawa is one of 8 Municipal Departments to receive the honor.
