The Missouri Department of Conservation has confirmed a black bear sighting over the weekend in Cass County Missouri — well north of where sightings are more typical. Now, before you go thinking about how Cass County borders Miami County in Kansas and wondering if a bear may wander over into Kansas, odds are slim. The bear was spotted on a trail cam near Highway 58 and Purvis Road, just south of Pleasant Hill, about 33 miles from Louisburg and the odds of a bear wondering into this part of Kansas is unlikely. In case you are wondering, there are no official sightings of bear in Franklin County; however, in 2014 a trail cam caught a picture of a furry, shaggy animal resembling a bear, in northern Franklin County. A local vet agreed it was a bear, but Wildlife and Parks officials say the black fur ball was a cow….. so….

If you do see a bear, remember they aren’t interested in you and alerting them to your presence by making loud sounds is the ideal way to scare them off.
