Expect to hear more about beehives and the ability to them in Ottawa at upcoming City Commission meetings. An Ottawa woman has sued the city over her inability to have beehives in her back yard and sell the honey. Upon checking with the city about the hives, Ellen Finnerty says a city planner told her that the zoning code prohibits any home businesses featuring “animal care of any type”. She posted it on Facebook and got the attention of Sam McRoberts, an attorney with the Kansas Justice Institute, who is now suing the city on her behalf:

Thank you to KCTV 5 for the audio. Finnerty and her attorney say the lawsuit isn’t about money. She just wants declaratory judgement from a judge, giving her the right to have beehives and sell the honey.
