A friend of mine walked out to his pond the other day and was shocked to see thousands of dead fish, a massive kill. What caused this massive die off? He began to think. Was it a chemical runoff from a nearby field? He had know idea. He called K-State Fisheries and Aquatics Extension Specialist, Joe Gerkin, who told him it was likely due to a low oxygen level in the pond:
Gerkin says he’s received quite a few calls lately about fish kills. He suggests putting an aerator into the system to keep the water mixed up and to be smart about how you apply herbicide to plants around the pond, and call your local Extension Agent immediately if you see signs of low oxygen levels in the pond.
