After a year and a half of legislative efforts, the Child Safe Haven Devices, to save the lives of unwanted babies, is moving to the final stage. The city of Ottawa will become the first Kansas site for a Safe Haven Box under a new law in the state that started with the Welfare Oversight Committee. Representative Timothy Johnson presented Ottawa Assistant Fire Chief, Shawn Dillon, with the first donation of $500 yesterday in Topeka. Ottawa resident Angie Malik first approached the Ottawa City Commission about the possibility of the box back in early May
No public funds will be used for the device.
