Storms that moved through northeast Kansas yesterday, July 14th, left a wake of electricity outages for Evergy customers. Winds between 80 and 100 miles per hour traversed across the Evergy service area, prompting line crews to work throughout the night trying to restore power. The restoration process is expected to be a multi-day effort.
Evergy has reached out to neighboring utilities, including Iowa, Colorado, Oklahoma and Missouri for assistance.
Just after the storms passed through, there were 10,000 customers without power in Douglas County alone. That number dropped to 6,000 by 9:30 last night. An update on how the restoration of service is progressing is expected later this morning.
Several City of Ottawa electricity customers reported outages last night after the storms passed through, including KOFO News Director, Jeff Brewer.
A funnel cloud was spotted in the vicinity of Bob Billings Parkway and Wakarusa Drive in Lawrence, but it never touched down.
