Big storms tend to bring in bad people trying to scam you out of your hard earned money. With the widespread damage caused by Sunday’s storm,July 30th, the city of Ottawa is warning people about outside roofing companies that are flocking to the area. Many of these are legitimate roofers, however, please be aware that scammers could be among them also, looking to make a quick buck. There are 1,500 roofers registered and in good standing in Kansas. If your roof is damaged, make sure the contractor you use is properly registered, and ask them to provide a copy of that registration to you before doing any work.
Some tips for home repairs in general…if a deal sounds too good to be true, it most likely is. Get multiple written bids. Ask for local references, and remember friends and neighbors are the best source of references. Finally, make sure your contractor is insured. Most importantly, document everything and don’t make a final payment or sign a release until you are satisfied with the work. Don’t let an unfortunate situation become worse. Beware.
