Anderson County’s annual report of unpaid property taxes show a 22% increase from last year, and nearly a 6% increase in the number of delinquent properties. Those delinquencies totaled $388,095 upaid on 461 lots in the most recent august 1st total, compared to 436 in last year who owed around $317,500 total. According to the Anderson County review, the number of affected property owners and the amount owed has declined in recent years after a high in 2018 of 482 owners and $398,000 in unpaid taxes. Anderson county has taken a more aggressive stance in recent years to schedule periodic tax sales, in which delinquent properties are condemned and foreclosed upon for the amount owed against them. Those properties are then auctioned off, usually at a loss, in order to put them back in the hands of owners who will pay taxes in the future.
