Americans are suckers. While not using that word, the FBI Internet Crime Complaint Division said Americans were conned out of a record setting $10 billion last year. 10 point 3 billion to be exact. This number is over 3 billion more than 2021. Kansans accounted for a large chunk of that money. Two thousand 399 victims lost over $58 million to scammers last year. Denise Groene of the Better Business Bureau says one of the most common scams is phishing scam in the form of a phone call, text message, or an email:
Since most victims send money to foreign fraudsters, the odds of getting your money back is very low. Some simple rules, don’t give out money over the phone. Number two, you don’t pay fines and bonds with gift cards. The prince of some exotic land has not left his fortune to you. In all seriousness, if you feel you have been scammed, contact local law enforcement immediately.
