How do you attract people to become teachers during a teacher shortage? A new apprenticeship program through Kansas Department of Education aims to attract and retain teaching talent by eliminating one of the biggest barriers aspiring teachers face…finances. The Registered Teacher Apprenticeship Program works by allowing districts to hire aspiring teachers it already has a relationship with, like paraprofessionals or former students who may already be pursuing careers in education. Shane Carter, the Director of Teacher Licensure with the Education Department says money may not be a barrier anymore as apprentices are paid and get their tuition paid by the school district:

He adds that now, those pursuing careers in education get the practical training they need without stressing over a way to make ends meet at home. Only one school is a part of the program this year; however, seven others are lined up to join when the program launches statewide in 2024.
