The Kansas Department of Transportation announced approved bids for state highway construction and maintenance projects. A major project approved for Franklin County that will help make the trail system even more attractive for those wanting to use the Flint Hills Trail to the west. KDOT has approved almost $5 million for improvements to the Flint Hills Trail from Iowa Road to Louisiana Terrace. With this, 2.3 miles of crushed limestone will be installed and will eliminate the current three mile detour on gravel roads in the area. According to engineers at the Department of Transportation, the funds do include money needed to construct a bridge over double railroad tracks west of Ottawa. At this time, trail users have to navigate, not only a busy Highway 68, but also the train tracks. The new bridge will make the trail much safer for everyone who uses the Flint Hills Trail. No word on when construction of the trail or the bridge may start.
