Yesterday, September 11th, at a ceremony to commemorate the 22nd anniversary of the 9-11 attacks on America, Ottawa Fire Chief, Tim Mathias, spoke about the “Tolling of the Bells” and how they hold a special meaning to all firefighters around the United States. Originally on nearly every street corner in every town in the United States, when the alarm was pulled a special code was sent out to the fire stations in the city. He explains what would happen when a firefighter died in the line of duty, tapping out a special signal 5-5-5, becoming universally known as “Tolling of the Bell”:
Always remember that day and be proud that you are an American.
