For all you turkey hunters wanting to bag that Thanksgiving turkey this year, bad news. The Kansas fall turkey season has been suspended. Even though fewer hunters participate in the fall season than the spring, turkey numbers are declining so rapidly, officials at the Kansas Wildlife and Parks Commission. Biologist say they have detected a large reduction in turkey numbers over the last 15 years, due to reduced reproduction rates all across the midwest and southeast.

Preventative measures are being taken to hopefully increase their numbers, such as reducing the bag limit from 4 birds to one bird and shortening the hunting season. The thinking is that eliminating the fall harvest will reduce the mortality rate even further and give the birds a chance to do a little extra, shall we say, “procreation”.
