Every year, at the 9-11 ceremony, the Ottawa Fire Department has a jagged piece of steel on display in a glass case. That beat up piece of steel is a piece of the World Trade Center that collapsed after the 9-11 attacks on America, September 11th, 2001. How did Ottawa end up with a piece of history? Fire Chief Tim Mathias explains:
It is only one of 1,500 artifacts given to fire stations around the country. Whenever the artifact is handled, it is handled with gloved hands. It is on display in the fire department lobby 24 hours a day. The public is welcome to view it anytime and check the memorial wall. Mathias encourages people to bring their kids and grand kids to teach them the importance of the day.
