Storm sewer issues along Main Street have delayed the Brown Avenue Reconstruction Project and are now costing the city of Osawatomie more money, following a recently approved change order. Osawatomie Public Works Director, Michele Silsbee says the Main Street storm sewer upgrade project was initiated as part of the Brown Avenue Reconstruction Project. The goal was to improve stormwater drainage from Brown Avenue by establishing three new storm sewer systems, specifically the storm sewer systems crossing Main Street at the 10th Street and 8th Street intersections.
Silsbee adds that in 2018 they realized the existing storm sewer under Main Street couldn’t handle the flow from Brown Avenue, and they had to have upgrades. Initially Main Street was to be closed for about 2 weeks at the start of August, but a design flaw stopped construction at the 10th Street intersection and then again at 8th Street, so a redesign was needed to address the issues. This change moved the cost of the project up over $47,000. BG Consultants agreed to cover $30,000 of that change order.
