We all know the importance of having working smoke alarms in our homes and most homeowners have them to protect their families. But, what if you don’t own the home and are renting from someone else? Are you responsible for the smoke alarms in that home? Ottawa Fire Department Lieutenant Mike Wilson, who is the Fire Prevention Coordinator, says the landlord is responsible for the alarms:
If you live in a rental home and are concerned about the smoke alarms in the home, contact your landlord and ask if the alarms could be checked. If there aren’t any, let them know about the program at the Ottawa Fire Department.
