Nine organizations, which mostly represent rural and agricultural interests, have written a letter to Congress supporting the passage of the AM Radio For Every Vehicle Act. The letter touts the reach of traditional am radio broadcasts which “carry a strong signal over significant distances even during catastrophic weather events” and the fact that FEMA relies on AM radio to “deliver critical public safety information.” In May, Kansas Association of Broadcasters, Allison Mazzie, issued this statement in support of AM radio:
Several car manufacturers have said they are dropping AM radio options in new vehicles. The groups signed the letter in support of legislation that would direct the Secretary of Transportation to ensure consumer access to AM radio in all vehicles because of its critical role in disseminating vital information during emergencies. To prevent rural communities from losing access to their favorite local programming by ensuring that AM radio continues to be a free, standard feature in all vehicles.”
