Today is the deadline for registering to vote in the November General Election. In Garnett, two residents have thrown their hat into the ring for City Commission as write-in candidates, in a field that already has two official filings. Nate Wiehl is a former campaign treasurer for one of the former 5th District Kansas Representative, Mark Samsel’s Campaign and also unsuccessfully sought appointment to a City Commission Seat in 2021. Wiehl says he hopes his election might bring an element of civility back to the Commission, after turmoil in the commission the last several months.

He says if elected, he plans to put a priority on infrastructure maintenance and finding non-property tax revenue to help fund the city. He says from what he understands, Garnett is funding too many things out of the Utility Budget. He believes in the need for revenues, other than property taxes, and things to make Garnett more appealing to attract families to expand the tax base.
