A new record stands in the Guiness Book of World Records. Just 10 years ago, Ed Currie, the South Carolina hot pepper expert, grew the carolina reaper, hotter than most pepper sprays used to subdue criminals, but he outdid himself this time. He has crossbred a new type of pepper, simply know as pepper x, measured at 2.69 million scoville units, and…he’s one of only three people to have eaten a whole one. He says when he first tried pepper x, it did more than just warm his heart:
A jalapeno is about 5,000 scoville units, a habanero, about 100,000, the carolina reaper, 1.6 million, pepper spray, 1.6, bear spray, 2.2 million. Pepper x, 2 .69 million. Is he done? Oh, no….Currie says he already has a new pepper that is measuring even hotter. Anyone lining up to eat one?
