Halloween celebrations are plenty in Kansas, but none on the scale of the city of Independence, Kansas, known as Neewollah, that’s halloween backwards. Started in 1919 as an effort to provide activities for kids of all ages in place of typical halloween pranks. Today, it’s a celebration that includes three parades…the doodah parade, which is an adult costume contest, a kiddies parade and the Grand parade, tomorrow morning at 11:00 October 28th. There’s a chili cook off, hometown musical talents, plus this year, special guest stars, the legendary Oak Ridge Boys!, yes, the…Oak Ridge Boys!! tomorrow night, October 28th! And a Queen Pageant, plus the downtown is filled with over 30 food and craft vendors, a carnival and a band stand for nightly entertainment, along with an arts and crafts show, a battle of the bands competition and much more that brings in over 75,000 people.
The fun started this past Saturday with events everyday through halloween. For a full list of events, go to neewollah.com. That’s halloween, spelled backwards.
