A new sales tax for Garnett could be on the horizon. In the latest edition of Town Talk, a semi-annual newsletter published by the City of Garnett, outgoing Mayor Jason Sheahan says Garnett does not have the funding to maintain what they have, let alone improve it, without raising property taxes, utility fees, activity fees or sale tax.
He says the solution may be to wrap them into one large bonded project. Things like a swimming pool, ball fields, rec center, golf course and more. He says the bonds would be used to fund the project and repaid with a 1% sales tax. After the bond is paid off, the sales tax would continue for ongoing maintenance and repair. In the article, he says he realizes there would be debate about what project is more important and should be done first. He ends by stating that the commission’s goal, over the next few months, will be to outline the projects and have a sales tax question on the ballot for voters to decide on the 2024 general election ballot.
