Although the next couple weeks will be at or above normal temperatures, the Kansas Department for Children and Families is opening the door for emergency financial relief on energy bills earlier than normal. Secretary Laura Howard says LIEP, or Low Income Energy Assistance Program, will begin accepting applications Monday, December 18th, as opposed to early January. With natural gas costs expected to rise this winter, Secretary Laura Howard says no Kansas family should be cold.
Applications for the program will be accepted starting Monday. To qualify, applicants must be responsible for direct payment of their heating bills. Applications are available at local Department for Children and Families offices. You can set up a direct meeting or fill out the application online. Aid eligibility is based on the number of people living at the family address and maximum gross monthly income, which has to be at or below 150% of the federal poverty level to qualify.
