Kansas Attorney, Kris Kobach, has refiled a price gouging lawsuit against MacQuarie Energy. The Federal suit seeks to recover money for Kansas consumers after MacQuarie manipulated natural gas prices during winter storm Uri in February 2021 and overcharged Kansans. Kobach says it’s disgraceful and he will do everything he can to recover what was taken from those Kansans.
The suit alleges that MacQuarie manipulated natural gas prices to Kansas consumers, forcing them to pay more than market forces would require. Kobach alleges that they overcharged Kansans $50 million or more and showed a large profit in the process. He says the decision to inflate prices benefited them but harmed many others that depended on the gas distribution. To pay for the excess cost, Kansas Gas, who says the loss is nearly $350 million, has placed surcharges on customer bills to make up for losses suffered during that time.
