The November general election saw an opening on the Garnett City Commission. Mayor Jason Shehan’s position was up for a vote.

In August some tense moments at a meeting where Shehan confronted, then Rec Director Phil Burres, about complaints he heard from the public regarding rec facilities, that ended with this comment:

Burres resigned. The other commissioners were not happy with how it was handled. Eventually, Shehan endorsed a write-in candidate for the office, Nate Wiehl. In his endorsement, he asked that anyone who supported him, to shift their votes to Weihl, effectively dropping out of the race. After all the write-in votes were counted in the Anderson County Canvass, County Clerk, Julie Wettstein announced that Garnett had a new City Commissioner. Wiehl had received a whopping 75% of the vote. Wiehl will take his position on the Board at the first meeting in January where he will be sworn at that time.
