One of the, if not the most important stories in Miami County in 2023 was Osawatomie’s power outage in October after a massive storm caused enough damage to be deemed “ a worse case scenario”, catastrophic failure of some vital equipment. After two days of little or no power, City Manager Bret Gendening, gave this update:

The transformer was huge… weighing in at 70,000 pounds, 12 feet wide, 10 feet long and 14 feet high. It was transported to Osawatomie in one day and took about 12 hours to get installed and online. After three days, power was restored to all Osawatomie residents and businesses, shortly after midnight on October 28th . The city finalized the purchase of the transformer for $150,000. A new one would have cost over $600,000
