The new year didn’t start out well for the Ottawa Police Department. Yesterday, January 1st, just after 1:00 in the afternoon, officers were dispatched to the 900 block of South Maple Street for a welfare check. Upon arrival, officers located a 56 year-old man deceased inside the residence. Ottawa Police Detectives investigated the scene and determined the man had died from what appeared to be a self inflicted gunshot wound. Further investigation is being conducted to ensure all appropriate information or evidence is collected.
Ottawa Police responded to two injury accidents on New Year’s Eve. The first due to distracted driving. Officers responded to the 900 block of Olive Street Sunday night. A vehicle traveling north on Olive, driven by a teen who, according to the Ottawa Police Department, was texting when he hit a parked vehicle owned by Shana Funk, a native of Ottawa who was in town visiting her mom. The teen driver was transported to AdventHealth Ottawa for treatment of minor injuries.
The second accident occurred at the intersection of 8th and Liberty, about the same time. No details are available and only minor injuries were reported.
